The Sabbath rest is for our benefit - Photo by Freepik

In recent years, I’ve returned to studying the Scriptures more deeply, reading them as a whole from beginning to end rather than through the lens of a religious doctrine that may twist what is written to fit its own beliefs. The more I read, seek, and apply the principles found in Scripture, the more convinced I become that it truly is the Word of God. And the more I begin to live by the Law of God, the more peace I experience.

2 Timothy 3:16  All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness

One of the first principles I started to practice was the Saturday Sabbath, one of Yah’s appointed times. On the Sabbath, we stop working and rest. And God was right — we need that. There was a season when I would sleep half the day on those Sabbaths because my body needed it so badly. For years I had been working seven days a week, or staying busy all the time, because if I wasn’t productive, I felt guilty.

Mark 2:27  And He said to them, The sabbath came into being for man’s sake, and not man for the sabbath’s sake.

I also believe the Sabbath is more than a health principle. I believe it carries deep spiritual meaning and that keeping it places us under God’s protection. The seventh day, Saturday, is His day, and He has set it apart. He has put a seal on those who follow it. But what exactly is a seal?

When we obey Yah’s instructions, including the fourth commandment to observe the Sabbath on the seventh day rather than the first, we are keeping His law and remaining under His protection.

Ezekiel 20:12  And also I gave them My sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am Jehovah who sets them apart.

Isaiah 56:6  Also the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, To minister to Him, and to love the name of the LORD, To be His servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath without profaning it, And holds fast to My covenant [by conscientious obedience]; All these I will bring to My holy mountain. And make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar; For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.” The Lord GOD, who gathers the dispersed of Israel, declares: “I will gather yet others to them (Israel), to those [already] gathered.

Revelation 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads

When we obey the instructions of Yah, which includes the 4th commandment of observing the Sabbath on the 7th day (not the 1st day), we keep His law and remain under His protection.

Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath (seventh) day to keep it holy (set apart, dedicated to God). “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath [a day of rest dedicated] to the LORD your God; on that day you shall not do any work, you or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock or the temporary resident (foreigner) who stays within your [city] gates. “For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything that is in them, and He rested (ceased) on the seventh day. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy [that is, set it apart for His purposes].

There is no valid, scripturally based reason why the day of the Lord was changed to Sunday, aside from the Roman Catholic Church leading people astray from worshipping the one true God, Creator of the Universe.

So I began learning more about God’s instructions found in the first five books of the Bible and doing my best to apply them. The more I did, the more sense Scripture made, and the more peace I felt.

I’ll be honest: I’m an independent woman, and I like feeling in control of my life, even though I know that’s mostly an illusion. So I found it easier to think of them as instructions rather than commandments. That small shift helped me let go of the knee-jerk reaction I used to have to the word commandment, which often felt like someone simply telling me what to do. But over time I came to see that since God made us, it only makes sense that He would know how we work best and how we can live in health and wholeness.

Proverbs 4:20-23 My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

I don’t believe we fully know anymore what is truly right or wrong. So much of what we’ve inherited from institutions is mixed with error, and morality has become subjective. That’s why I believe we need to learn and live by His instructions, found in the first five books of the Bible and demonstrated by Jesus in the New Testament. I don’t claim to understand every reason behind every instruction, but what I have put into practice has changed my life for the better.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;

Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.

Job 28:8 And He said to men, ‘See, the fear of Yahweh/Yahovah, that is wisdom, and to turn from evil is understanding.

I also believe we need to be careful not to confuse man’s doctrine with God’s Word. If what we’ve been taught does not line up with the whole Bible, then we should question whether it is really from God or from man. I believe prayer is essential too — we need to ask God for wisdom in how to understand and apply His Word.

The New Testament is not a separate message or a new doctrine. It is a continuation of the old covenant — the same truth from beginning to end. When you read the whole Bible together, you can see how it all fits. The beginning points to the end, and the end points back to the beginning. You cannot fully understand the New Testament or the words of Yeshua if you remove the Old Testament. It is all one message.

“Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them

2 Timothy 3:15 and that from a babe you have known the Set-apart Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for deliverance through belief in Messiah יהושע.

(which Scriptures is Timothy referring to? Torah and the prophets! There was no ‘new testament’ in those days)

2 Timothy 3:16-17″]All Scripture is breathed out by Elohim and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for setting straight, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of Elohim might be fitted, equipped for every good work.

I also believe that Yahweh blesses those who keep His law and instructions — with healing, protection, provision, and more. But the goal is not to obey just to get blessings. The goal is to do what is right because we love and revere Him. The blessings are simply the natural result of a heart that is willing to obey. Read the whole Deuteronomy 28 chapter…. if you obey (if is conditional…. and it is repeated 4 times, so it must be important).

To me, the Torah is the manual for living a healthy, righteous, and peaceful life. It is not just for one group of people. It applies to everyone, just as the law of gravity applies to everyone whether they understand it or not.

Exodus 12:49 There is one Torah for the native-born and for the stranger who sojourns among you.

Number 15:16 One Torah and one right-ruling is for you and for the stranger who sojourns with you.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the entire matter: Fear (revere) Elohim and guard his commands, for this applies to all mankind!

Overall, I believe God’s instructions bring protection and peace. They help us walk in wisdom, avoid destruction, and live in a way that honors Him.

Proverbs 3:1-2 My son, do not forget my Torah, And let your heart watch over my commands; For length of days and long life And peace they add to you.

Proverb 13:14 The Torah of the wise is a fountain of life, Turning one away from the snares of death.

Psalms 119:165 Great peace have those loving Your Torah, And for them there is no stumbling-block.

Psalms 1:1-3 Blessed is the man who shall not walk in the counsel of the wrong, And shall not stand in the path of sinners, And shall not sit in the seat of scoffers, But his delight is in the Torah of יהוה, And he meditates in His Torah day and night. For he shall be as a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That yields its fruit in its season, And whose leaf does not wither, And whatever he does prospers.

Psalms 119:142 Your righteousness is righteousness forever, And Your Torah is truth.

Psalms 119:170-173 Let my prayer come before You; Deliver me according to Your word. My lips pour forth praise, For You teach me Your laws. My tongue sings of Your word, For all Your commands are righteousness. Your hand is a help to me, For I have chosen Your orders.

John 9:31 And we know that Elohim does not hear sinners. But if anyone fears Elohim and does His desire, He hears him

And I believe that the equity jurisprudence process can have much more effect, and provide us with more justice if we come back under the protection of Yah by following His instructions.
